Trauma and chronic inflammatory diseases can leave critical defects that the body cannot heal by itself. The resultant loss of function can be debilitating or it may affect quality of life. Using a combination of cells, scaffolds and growth-stimulating signals, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine seeks to achieve functional restoration of organs. Instead of synthetic and metal bearing prosthesis, live bone and cartilage are being engineered.
The long-term goal of the department is to develop scaffolds that have the ability to induce cellular responses and provide the structural support for cell attachment and subsequent tissue development. Our group develop novel biomaterials based on either organic (collagen, chitosan) or inorganic (bioglasses) origin. We test their biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties in vitro and in vivo. We primarily focus on bone and skin regeneration in general and specifically on periodontal regeneration.
